Everything You Wanted To Know About Basketball

Sports are America’s greatest pastime. From the players to the coaches, parents and spectators, it seems a majority of people are involved in sport somehow. Basketball is one of those sports that garners a lot of attention. But in order to help your team gain the wins and get the attention they deserve, you have to bring skills to the court and score points. So here are some ways to get those skills and bring your team to a winning season.

When you are practicing your shooting, take the practice shots you would attempt during the game. You are rarely going to be open for long enough to get your feet planted and line up the shot, so shoot on the move. Practice off dribble and shooting while moving for better results at game time.

Practice the skill of pass catching. Don’t just work on waist-level, perfect passes, though, work on receiving tougher passes as well. Understand that during a game, you will receive very scattered passes. Some will be good; some won’t. So you should do the team a favor by knowing how to take in any kind of a pass that comes from someone.

When you are playing in a game, try your best to forget your misses. Nothing good can come from you dwelling on the last shot you missed or the last 20 you missed. Each shot is a new opportunity to score. Stay clam and keep trying even if you miss a few. Dwelling on the miss will lead to you overreacting and missing even more.

Playing basketball does not require excessive muscle development. Muscle is good, but you can have too much. Overdeveloped muscles could actually interfere with your score percentage.

Make sure you have prepared for your games by taking care of yourself. Don’t see your team short by staying up all night, eating junk food before games or skipping practice because you have things you would rather do. make a commitment to your team by being there for the team on the court and off the court.

If the basketball game is quickly getting out of hand for your team, find a way to slow the pace down. Your opponent wants to keep the chaos for your team going as it’s causing you all to make mistakes. You need to do the opposite. The minute you have the ball, dribble up court slowly. Or take a time out if you’ve got one available.

Have your games taped so you can play them back later and observe your court presence. You’ll likely see ways that you can improve. Evaluate what you see honestly, but don’t be too hard on yourself. A realistic view of yourself can be quite helpful.

To be a great basketball player, you have to make the ball part of your body. It may seem silly but roll it in your hands, dribble in the driveway, go for walks with it and take it with you wherever you go. The more time that ball spends attached to your body, the harder it will be for defenders to take it from you on the court.

Master the stop and shoot. Basketball is so much about movement that sometimes the most effective manner to get clear of an opponent is to surprise them with no movement at all. Master dribbling up court fast and when you hit a mark you’re comfortable with, stop short, pull up and shoot. Your opponent will find it tough to stop their forward movement, so you’ll have a clear look at the basket.

If you’re playing the guard position, having good court vision is an absolute key to success. You should always keep your eyes moving and focus on what’s happening around you. Learn how to dribble the ball with your head up. Looking down while dribbling will mean you can’t see what’s happening on the court.

An excellent way to have proper defensive posture is to remain in the correct stance. You need to learn how to slide your feet instead of crossing one foot in front of the other. Don’t cross your feet and no one will get around you.

A good place to start in basketball is to understand how to play defense. Usually the teams that win in the pros all play great defense. The reason being is that defense is usually much more consistent than offense. It’s a lot harder to make a shot than it is to defend one. Help your team win more, and learn defense!

As you can see, learning a skill can be easy bit practicing and perfecting it may take time. But that is fine because as long as you are enjoying what you do, you will only get better at it. Practicing as often as you can may mean that you spend time alone doing it with no one to cheer you. But keep in mind that every bit of practice will lead you to the moment when your skills will be called into play and you can make that move on the court that every player dreams of.
